After a long Central Valley summer, shingle color and reflectance matter as much as how the roof looks from the street. Here is how cool-roof asphalt fits a Modesto replacement, and what to verify before anyone promises a rating.
Mid-install on a Modesto re-roof: Timberline HDZ courses in Copper Canyon going down over FeltBuster synthetic underlayment. The color is chosen long before the first bundle is opened.
After months of Central Valley sun, Modesto homeowners usually ask about curled edges, soft spots and the first fall leaks. Those are real checks. There is another decision that comes up whenever a roof is replaced: which asphalt product and color go back on the deck, especially if you care how hot that surface runs next summer.
This guide is for homeowners in Modesto, Ceres, Riverbank, Oakdale, Turlock, Ripon and nearby Central Valley towns. It is different from what Central Valley heat does to asphalt shingles (aging signs you can spot from the ground), standing seam metal before fall (a different roof system) and shingle nailing before fall wind (fastening). Here the focus is choosing a reflective, cool-roof asphalt shingle, explained honestly and without made-up ratings.
On a sloped home roof, a cool-roof asphalt option is a shingle made with reflective granules, designed to bounce more of the sun’s energy away from the roof surface than a standard shingle of similar color. Manufacturers publish solar reflectance, thermal emittance and SRI values for specific products and colors, and rated products are listed in the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) directory.
That “specific color” part matters. GAF’s reflective architectural line is Timberline HDZ RS (Reflector Series), part of its California Cool lineup, and it comes in a limited set of colors. GAF’s spec sheet lists Hickory as one of them. Many other Timberline HDZ colors, including Copper Canyon, are standard (non-reflective) colors. So “Timberline” on a quote does not tell you whether a roof is a cool roof; the product name, color and CRRC listing do.
In California, Title 24 Part 6 cool-roof rules can apply to a re-roof depending on climate zone, building type, roof slope and how much of the roof is replaced. A brochure line or a nice finished photo is not a compliance document. Our GAF roofing systems page lists cool-roof design options and says the same thing: we verify eligibility for your address before permitting.
A cool-roof shingle does not replace sound underlayment, drip edge, valleys, ventilation or correct nailing. It is one product decision inside a full roof system. For the layer under the shingles, see why underlayment matters in Modesto heat.
On a recent Modesto re-roof (featured photo), our crew fastened GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in Copper Canyon over GAF FeltBuster synthetic underlayment. Copper Canyon is a standard Timberline HDZ color, which is exactly why it makes a useful comparison: the homeowner chose the look, and the reflectance question is answered by the product and color, not by the photo.
In Riverbank, the finished roof below is GAF Timberline Hickory across a multi-plane roof. It is the same re-roof we followed from tear-off in tear-off or roof-over. Hickory is sold in both the standard Timberline line and the reflective HDZ RS line, which is why the bundle label and the order matter when cool-roof performance is the goal.

We do not paste reflectance or CRRC numbers into this article. Those values are tied to an exact product and color, and they are updated over time, so we check the current manufacturer table and CRRC listing for the shingle you actually buy.
The same Riverbank roof from a wider angle. Finished color is something you live with for many Central Valley summers.
