You don’t need a roof replacement to get your gutters fixed. Here is how to tell whether your gutters need a cleaning, a repair or a new seamless run before the Central Valley rainy season, and what a gutter-only job actually involves.
A gutter outlet and downspout elbow on one of our gutter jobs. The outlet is where most of the water in a run leaves the gutter, so it has to be sized and placed right.
A lot of Modesto homeowners assume gutter work only happens when the roof is replaced. That’s not the case. If your roof still has good years left but the gutters overflow, sag or leak at the corners, the gutters can be cleaned, repaired or replaced on their own. The right answer depends on what is actually wrong, and it is often the smallest fix.
| What you notice | Usually points to |
|---|---|
| Water spills over the front during rain, but the gutter is straight and the seams are dry | Cleaning. Leaves, silt and roof granules are slowing the water down or plugging an outlet. |
| A downspout barely drips while the gutter above it overflows | Cleaning the outlet and elbows. Packed debris in the downspout is a common culprit. |
| Drips at one corner or one joint while the rest of the run is fine | Repair. A corner, end cap or joint has opened up and needs to be resealed or replaced. |
| One section sags or has pulled away from the fascia | Repair. Hangers have loosened or the pitch is off, so water sits instead of draining. |
| Leaks at many joints, rust or splits along the run, gutters that keep sagging after repairs, or soft fascia behind them | Replacement. At that point patching tends to chase the same problems every season. |
After a long, dry Valley summer, gutters fill with dust, leaves, fruit-tree litter and shingle granules that never got flushed out. The first heavy rain turns that mix into a paste that blocks outlets. If the gutter is straight, the hangers are tight and the joints are dry, a thorough cleaning of the troughs, outlets and downspouts is usually all it needs. Our earlier post covers what you can check from the ground after summer.
Leaves caught at the edge of a gutter guard. Guards cut down on big debris, but they still need a seasonal look so water can get into the gutter.
Many gutter problems are local. A corner that drips, an end cap that lets go, a downspout knocked loose by a ladder, or one sagging stretch between hangers can usually be fixed without touching the rest of the system. A good repair also checks the pitch, because a gutter that holds standing water clogs faster and pulls harder on its hangers.
Corners and outlets carry the most water in a run, so they are the first places to check for drips and loose fittings.
Replacement starts to make sense when the problems are spread out instead of local: leaks at many joints, rust or splits along the run, sections that keep sagging after repairs, or water that has been running behind the gutter long enough to soften the fascia. Older gutters with a seam every few feet also have more places to leak than a seamless run.
New gutters can go on a house whose roof is staying. That’s a normal job for us. If the roof is due for replacement within a few years, though, it is worth talking about timing, because gutter work and the roof edge (including the drip edge) fit together best when they are planned together.
On most houses, the install itself takes a day once the runs are measured and confirmed.

Yes. Gutters can be installed, repaired or cleaned on their own. We just check the roof edge first so the new gutters are not attached to damaged fascia.
At least once a year, ideally before the rainy season. Homes under trees, especially fruit, walnut or oak trees, often need it more often.
No. Guards reduce large debris, but dust, seed pods and leaves still collect on and under them. They still need a seasonal check.
They can. Water that spills behind the gutter wets the fascia, the roof edge and the underlayment at the eave over and over. That is how soft fascia and edge rot start.
